WHEREAS, Lazaro Arbos, a Collier County resident and Gulf Coast High School graduate,
auditioned for American Idol in Chicago and was given a golden ticket to Hollywood to
compete in the twelfth season of the show; and,
WHEREAS, Lazaro Arbos impressed the judges and America week after week, making it to the
American Idol Top Ten, ultimately finishing in sixth place; and,
WHEREAS, his combination of vocal talent, background story and personality made him a fan
favorite; and,
WHEREAS, his bravery in the competition inspired the nation and shed light on the stuttering
community, which consists of roughly three million Americans; and,
WHEREAS, his courage was apparent to the American Idol audience and assisted the Stuttering
Foundation in its outreach; and,
WHEREAS, Tom Christopoul, chairman of Rita's Italian Ice, Lazaro's place of employment prior to
joining Idol, presented the Stuttering Foundation with a $10,000 donation on Lazaro's
behalf; and,
WHEREAS, this donation was especially poignant to Lazaro because of his long-term goal to open
a clinic for uninsured individuals with stutters to get treatment for the communication
disorder; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County is proud of its hometown hero who showed dedication, poise and
perseverance in the face of adversity and congratulates him on the bright future
ahead.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that April 23, 2013 be designated as
LAZARO ARBOS DAY
