WHEREAS, Dottie Weiner, a pioneer of modern Marco Island, arrived during the Deltona heyday,
working in real estate and teaching swimming at the Marco Beach Hotel, the only public
pool on the is/and; and,
WHEREAS, "Miss Dottie, " as she is known to thousands of children, taught multiple generations how
to swim in her over forty years as a swim instructor and coach, beginning as the first
female life guard for the City of New York at Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn; and,
WHEREAS, Miss Dottie encouraged parents to enroll their children in swimming lessons as infants and
was honored numerous times for life-saving instructions that led students to save at least
ten people from drowning; and,
WHEREAS, her instruction expanded to include a multi-faceted program for elementary students
called "Waterwise" that taught life-saving disciplines; and,
WHEREAS, her programs reached many students, from East Nap/es to Immokalee and the county's
Everglades facility for corrections; and,
WHEREAS, she helped design a safe and handicapped accessible pool and raised the funding to build
the pool, in addition to raising thousands of dollars by organizing the Duck Derby for the
Aquatic Program at the Greater Marco Family YMCA; and,
WHEREAS, the Greater Marco Family YMCA announced in January 2013 that its new pool, would be
named in honor of Dottie Weiner; and,
WHEREAS, the community is invited to celebrate Dottie Weiner at the Pool Dedication Ceremony held
on Healthy Kids Day at the Greater Marco Family YMCA on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at
12:30 p.m.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that April 27, 2013 be recognized as
DOTTIE WEINER DAY
