WHEREAS, April 7`h is the birthday of Majory Stoneman Douglas, one of the preeminent
defenders and advocates for the Everglades; and,
WHEREAS, in her honor, the Florida State Legislature has designated April 7, 2013 as
Everglades Day; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County contains a significant area of the Big Cypress Swamp and the
Greater Everglades Ecosystem; and
WHEREAS, Collier County has demonstrated its commitment and dedication to conservation
and protection of our natural resources with over 800, 000 acres of land in public
ownership; and,
WHEREAS, our natural environment is a major component of our quality of life and our
economy in Collier County; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County has many distinguished organizations, associations, and individuals
dedicated to the preservation and responsible use of our environment and natural
resources; and,
WHEREAS, Everglades Week is a time for the citizens of Collier County to recognize and
educate the public about the issues facing the Everglades while celebrating its
uniqueness and beauty.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that the second week in April 2013 be designated as
EVERGLADES WEEK IN COLLIER COUNTY

Designated by the Florida Legislature, Marjory Stoneman
Douglas' birthday will now be "Everglades Day" in Florida! Come
hear regional dignitaries honor the day, followed by a walk over
the Observation Bridge and mangrove Snail Trail to learn how
Even9lades Restoration helps heal estuaries from Biscayne Bay
to Rookery Bay. Film presentations will then be shared in the
auditorium to conclude the event.
