WHEREAS, childhood obesity rates in the United States have more than tripled in the past thirty
years, and,
WHEREAS, the percentage of obese children aged 6 -11 years increased from 7 percent in 1980 to
almost 20 percent in 2008 while the percentage of obese children aged 12 -19 years
increased from 5 percent to 18 percent over the same time period; and,
WHEREAS, during the 2011 -2012 school year, 11 Collier County middle and elementary schools had
obesity rates exceeding 30 percent of the screened student population, and,
WHEREAS, the Safe and Healthy Children's Coalition of Collier County has partnered with physicians,
dieticians, nurses and fitness experts to encourage families to incorporate simple
recommendations into their lives to promote a healthy lifestyle; and,
WHEREAS, the Coalition recommends the "9- 5 -2 -1 -0 Let's 60" initiative, an easy to follow program
with the following suggestions:
9 Hours of Sleep a day
5 Servings of Fruit and Vegetables
2 Hour Limit on Screen Time (TV /Internet)
1 Hour of Physical Activity a Day
0 Sugary Beverages or Tobacco, and,
WHEREAS, the Coalition suggests teaching children this easy message by posting it around the home
and classroom to serve as well family participation including goal setting and support; and,
WHEREAS, over 45 government and nonprofit agencies in Collier County have combined efforts to
create programs to improve health outcomes and prevent childhood obesity.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that March 2013 be designated as
9- 5 -2 -1 -0 LET'S 60 NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH
