Agenda 06/08/2010 Item #16H 6 Agenda Item No. 16H6 June 8, 2010 Page 1 of 6 PROCLAMA rION WHEREAS, Calusa Park Elementary School students have participated in the Charity for Change School "Giver" Program; and, WHEREAS, students have been good citizens by practicing positive character traits; and, WHEREAS, students have been learning about charities, giving donations, and raising money for their charities, thereby helping other people, animals and the environment; and, WHEREAS, students have participated in the weekly Charity for Change ''Counting for Charity" math game, thereby earning extra dollars for their class charities,' and, WHEREAS, students have participated in classroom visits by charity representatives and attended field trips to further learn about their charities; and, WHEREAS, students have participated in volunteer projects, thereby further helping thelr community. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that Calusa Park Elementary School students are hereby proclaimed Star ''Givers'' and citizens for the 2009 - 2010 school year. BROCK, CLERK Agenda Item No. 16H6 June 8, 2010 Page 5 of 6 PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory was created as the Cape Haze Marine Lqboratory in 1955 by Dr. Eugenie Clark to teach people about the sea in a two room 240 square foot shed in Placida, and was relocated t~ Siesta Key in 1960 and renamed Mote Marine Laboratory in honor of it$ major benefactor, William R. Mote, before moving in 1978 to its current headquarters on City Island, Sarasota, and: WHEREAS, world renown Mote Marine Laboratory is one of the few remaining independent marine research centers with more than 191 staff members, 34 of whom have doctoral degrees, and nearly 1,300 volunteers conducting marine research and education projects locally and in more than 50 countries around the world, and: WHEREAS, the Laboratory currently has 200,000 square feet of research, education and public outreach space on a 10.5 acre campus on City Island in Sarasota, as well as a 200 acre inland aquaculture park in Sarasota and field stations in Charlotte Horbor and the Florida Keys on Key West and Summerland Key, and: WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory has performed significant community service for the citizens of Collier County, through environmental education and scientific studies of Southwest Florida Bays, the contiguous rivers_ streams, estuarine, and gulf areas of Collier County, and: WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory has answered the challenge of educating the public about marine and estuarine ecosystems through its public Aquarium which hosts 350,000 visitors annually and its education programs which reach 28,000 students annually, and: WHEREAS, Mote Marine Laboratory is celebrating 55 years of advancing the science of the sea through research, education and community service. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that June 13 through June 19, 2010 be designated as MOTE MARINE LABORATORY WEEK with June 13, 1955 being the date of incorporation of the Laboratory.
