EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve a budget amendment in the amount of $8,500 to recognize
revenue and appropriate expenditures for a grant awarded from the Community Foundation
of Collier County to serve the needs of seniors in Immokalee.
OBJECTIVE: To obtain approval to recognize revenue and appropriate expenditures for a grant
awarded from the Community Foundation of Collier County to be used to provide services to
enhance the health, safety and welfare of seniors in Immokalee,
CONSIDERATIONS: In 2009, The Immokalee Initiative of the Community Foundation of Collier
County in conjunction with the Women's Initiative received a grant in the amount of $25,000 from
the Agua Fund. These funds served a two-part purpose. An amount equal to $12,500 was used by
the Immokalee Initiative to hire a consultant to prepare a needs assessment for Collier County that
provided updated demographic information, identification of needed services and the gaps, as well
as an assessment of seniors who are not being reached that have needs, The second $12,500 of the
award was given to the Collier County Housing and Hwnan Services Department to provide
services to seniors in Immokalee with the greatest need, The Housing and Hwnan Services
Department provided the Community Foundation with a list of eligible services that would be
provided with the funding, Services included nutritional supplements, incontinent supplies, lift
chairs, bedding, fuel and grocery gift cards, pet care and other supply type items, The Case
Management staff in the Services for Seniors program identified eligible seniors in Immokalee in
need of services and nearly all of the current grant funds have been expended.
In March 2010, the Agua Fund awarded the Immokalee Initiative of the Community Foundation an
additional $12,500. Of that award, the Community Foundation has awarded the Housing and
Human Services Department an additional $8,500 to continue to assist needy seniors in Immokalee,
Therefore, a budget amendment in the amount of $8,500 is required to recognize the funding and
appropriate expenditures for this award,

Ms. Marcy Krurnbine, Director
Collier County Housing & Human Services Department
Health and Public Services Building H, Room 211
3301 East Tamiami Trail
Naples, Florida 34112
Dear Ms. Krurnbine;
The Community Foundation of Collier County has been working on a collaborative effort
__ regarding senior ~~~oJJLCQmmllnity The. WOTnpn's Initiati=hasipearheadlld the ----
creation of the Leadership Council on Aging to identify needs and gaps in services and to
develop a Senior Resource Center. The Leadership Council is currently working on establishing
a 211 line for Collier County for information and referral services.
The lmmokalee Initiative of the Community Foundation has received a grant from the Agua
Fund, Inc. in the amount of $12,500. The purpose of the grant is twofold: first, we will conduct
a survey of senior needs in lmmokalee and their accessibility to services. This survey will be
conducted by a nonprofit organization and the Collier County Housing and Human Services
Department with clients they currently serve. The cost for this survey and a report on the data
collected is estimated at $4,000.
The second part of the grant is for $8,500 to provide direct services to seniors with the
greatest needs in Immokalee. The needs in lmmokalee are critical due to the fact that one
in four seniors live below the poverty level. In addition, 61 % have a disability and 64%
do not live with a spouse. Many are the primary caregiver for grandchildren; 45% of the
grandparents who live in households with children under the age of 18 are responsible for
the grandchild,
The Community Foundation partnered with the Collier County Housing and Human
Services Department to assess the most critical needs of their senior clients last year with
a previous grant from the Agua Fund and will continue to provide the same services as
last year's grant to seniors in lmmokalee. We appreciate your help in delivering these
services to those most in need,
'~cl~
