Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, nicknamed "The L.ady with the L.amp':
during the Crimean War she was a 'ministering angel' working in the war hospitals, and as it was
described. "as her slender form glides quietly along each corridor, every f'Dor fellow's face
softens with gratitude at the sight of her. When all the medical officers have retired for the
night and si'lence and darkness has settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick she may be
observed alone, with a little lamp in her hond, making her solitary rounds"; and.

this year the theme of the week is ''Nurses Trusted to Care" recognizing the nearly 3.1 million
registered nurses in the United States comprise our nation's largest health care profession,
with a depth and breadth of registered nursing professionals that meet the different and
emerging health care needs of the American population in a wide range of settings,' and,
The American Nurses Association, as the voice for the registered nurses of this country, is
working to chart a new course for a healthy nation that relies on increasing delivery of primary
and preventive health care, with a renewed emphasis on primary and preventive health care
that wH/ require the better utilization of all of our nation's registered nursing resources; and,
the American Nurses Association has declared the week of May 6 through 12 as NA TIONAL.

registered nurses strive to provide safe and high quality patient care and map out the way to
