EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to recognize Tona Nelson, Senior Administrative Assistant, Parks and Recreation
Department as the Employee of the Month for February 2011.
OBJECTIVE: To recognize Tona Nelson, Senior Administrative Assistant, as the Employee of
the Month for February 2011.
CONSIDERATIONS: Tona Nelson, Senior Administrative Assistant, has been nominated as the
"Employee of the Month" for February 2011. Tona, an employee of the County since 2003,
works in the Parks and Recreation Department.
Tona consistently looks for ways to improve the department and enhance her responsibilities.
She listens to the needs of the department, figures out what has to be done and acts. Tona
became the Senior Administrative Assistant to the department in 2005 and since then she has
many accomplishments to her name. She is responsible for organizing and updating the
department's vast number of Standard Operating Procedures. Having these procedures in place
was vital for the department to receive re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of
Parks and Recreation Agencies. This designation is only held by 90 agencies around the
country and thanks to Tona's hard work and organizational skills, the department received a
perfect score on their evaluation. She also assisted with efforts to win the Florida Recreation
and Park Association Agency Excellence Award in 2010. In addition to supporting the
leadership team, she also provides assistance during the budget process and develops
informational packets for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. One of her biggest
accomplishments to date is the development of monthly the Parks & Recreation employee
newsletter. The newsletter is used to communicate information from the Director's office and to
increase employee morale by showcasing events, awards and birthdays.
Tona has a unique approach to celebrating the department's successes and has positively
affected the Parks and Recreation employees during these difficult times. She is truly deserving
of this award.
FISCAL IMP ACT: The selected "Employee of the Month" receives a $150.00 cash award.
Funds are available in the employee's Budget Cost Center.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact associated with
this Executive Summary.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the recognition of
Tona Nelson as "Employee of the Month" for February 2011.
