PROCL AMA TION
WHEREAS, the Collier County Recycling Ordinance Number 2009 -56 established the Waste Reduction Awards
Program (the WRAP award); and,
k REAS, the WRAP award recognizes businesses, institutions, and multi - family residences for enhanced and
innovative recycling programs; and,
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners is pleased to recognize the Naples Daily News for contributing to
the greater good of Collier County by advocating the 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" philosophy, and by
adopting eco- friendly green policies, thereby helping to prolong the usable life of the Collier County
Landfill; and
WHEREAS, the Naples Daily News' recycling, reuse, and source reduction program includes:
• Recycling 1, 967, 000 pounds (984 tons) of paper (newsprint); 335, 000 pounds (168 tons) of cardboard;
and 60, 000 pounds (30 tons) of high -grade aluminum per year;
• Using 100% recycled paper for approximately 40% (2, 900 tons) of the newsprint produced each year;
• Maintaining a 'green" facility to reduce energy consumption and lower energy cost by using captured
rainwater for irrigation, installing computer - controlled lighting systems in large, open areas with
efficient fluorescent lighting; installing motion- sensor light switches in smaller rooms, and LED site
lighting inside and outside the facility; and using a state -of- the -art computer controlled HVAC system;
• Reducing waste by placing recycling containers at conveniently located areas for all recyclable items,
and reusing plastic pallets to load and unload newsprint;
• Collecting 55 cubic yards of compacted waste per year compared to 312 cubic yards of non - compacted
waste produced in 2008; and,
-?E45, the WRAP award program includes a framed certificate, a trophy and space on the County's website
showcasing eco - friendly business practices and recycling programs, and,
WHEREAS, the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Department congratulates Robert Caton, Technical Service
Manager, Kelly Benson, Vice President of Operations, and all the staff of the Naples Daily News for
their outstanding efforts to promote waste reduction, reuse and recycling, promote environmental
awareness, choosing renewable and sustainable resources for their facility, and setting a positive
example for other printing institutions. Their initiatives will have a significant effect on sustaining the
usable life of the Collier County Landfill and protecting the environment.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that we
congratulate the
NAPLES DAZ Y NEWS
for its continued contributions and efforts in recycling and its green facility mission.
