WHEREAS, Crohn'F disease and ulcerative colitis are serious, chronic inflammatory diseases of
the gastrointestinal tract with no known cause or cure, and,
WHEREAS, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel
disease, afflict approximately 1.4 million people in the United States, 307. of
whom were diagnosed as children, with numbers rising every day, and,
WHEREAS, the unpredictable nature of these painful and debilitating digestive diseases
create a significant burden on the community and the economy: more than $1.26
billion in direct and indirect costs annually in the United States, according to the
American Sastroenterological Associationan annual cost; and,
WHEREAS, individuals affected by these diseases are at a high risk for developing colorectal
cancer: and,
WHEREAS, a lack of awareness among health professionals and the general public may
contribute to misdiagnosis and mismanagement of these diseases; and,
WHEREAS, the goals of Crohn's and Colitis Awaress Week are to encourage people to join the
effort to find a cure, engage in activities aimed at raising awareness, promote
and support biomedical research and provide support to individuals and families
coping with the disease.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that December 1 -7, 2012 be designated as
CROHN'S AND COLITIS WEEK
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 13th Day of November, 2012.
