RESOLUTION NO.2018 - 87
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING ENHANCED PUBLIC
ACCESS TO THE PICAYUNE STRAND STATE FOREST.
WHEREAS, Collier County is home to the Picayune Strand State Forest containing
approximately 78,000 acres of land; and
WHEREAS, the forest is in the heart of the Big Cypress Basin and contains a mosaic of
cypress strands, wet prairie and pine flatwoods in the lowlands and subtropical hardwood
hammocks in the uplands; and
WHEREAS, the forest currently provides public access via equestrian, hiking, and
cycling trails and allows hunting and fishing through permits managed by the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission; and
WHEREAS, the forest is home to an abundance of wildlife including Florida panthers,
black bears, bald eagles, wood storks, and many other wildlife; and
WHEREAS, in the past, the forest also provided off road vehicular access; and
WHEREAS, it is the public's desire to enhance their access to the forest and work with
the management agencies to preserve the beauty of the forest.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS, COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that it supports an update to Ten-
Year Resource Management Plan for the Picayune Strand State Forest to allow swamp buggies
(excluding ATV's) to access the forest managed by the Florida Forestry Service on designated
roads and trails only during hunting season via a permit process for a reasonable fee.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be sent to Adam H.
Putman, Commissioner of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
THIS RESOLUTION ADAPTED after motion, second, and majority vote favoring
