Other side effects: Rearenders, local $$$ sent to Oz, AZ or Goldman- Sachs, where it won't come back, and tourists and shoppers driven away. Worse, a false expectation of safety, because cameras can't stop the guys who cause the accidents, the real late runners. (If cameras worked, camera sellers wouldn't have the crash videos they supply to the media.) Want safety, no side effects? To cut car /pedestrian accidents, train your kids (and yourself) not to step out just'cuz the walk sign came on. To cut nuisance running (a fraction of a second late), lengthen the yellows. It's cheap to do so can be done all over town. The reason the dangerous real late (multiple seconds) runs can't be stopped by the mere presence of a camera is because the runner won't know (a tourist) or won't remember (a distracted or impaired "local ") that there's a camera up ahead. They're not doing it on purpose! To cut these real late runs, improve the visual cues that say, "Intersection ahead." Florida's DOT Packet Page -137- 3/13/2012 Item 6. B. found that better pavement markings (paint!) cut running by up to 74 %. Make the signal lights bigger, add backboards, and put the poles on the NEAR side of the corner. Put brighter bulbs in the street lights at intersections. Put up lighted name signs for the cross streets. Who needs cameras and their side effects? Nongeriatric_Redux writes: Another example of just how out of touch our clueless commissioners are. dmarko326 writes: It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Not about safety! Even Colleta was convinced that there are no stats showing the safety of the thing as a ROI for the investment. dmarko326 writes: Even Rambosk is in on it! Quote above says w/o cameras 4 officers would additional four or five traffic officers at a cost of $100,000 each. HOLY CRAP! $100K for a traffic cop —! And What About the Officers who have to fuddle with the video p[layback back at Headquarters. Betcha the pulled some of the most senior officers for that duty that were already making way too much! lol! ---------- Reeed -Robin writes: Ms Albers, You are showing true UNINFORMED colors, hun. Many "law enforcement" agencies have them. It is rather sad people don't see the police for what they truly are: goose stepping jack booted thugs willing to shoot you in the back of the head if they thought they could get away with it. Remember we already have one thug..johnny "the planter" cisneros planting dope on people for collier county sheriff department. We also had two people disappear that were last seen with collier county sheriff department. Go ahead and tell your-yes-they are the good guys LOL!We have our local sheriff-who took an oath... protecting the scrote that is planting dope on people in collier county and then "finding" it. If you want to find out WHO is your greatest threat to freedom...simply look in washington or tallahassee. Simply look at the gestapo police stations on every corner. Did you know they are using drones in Ft Lauderdale to spy on people? Go ahead and tell me how much you love THIS country for your freedoms! I will call you either a liar..or a fool to your face. sig heil comrad... If you have private land and the gestapo police are flying drones over YOUR land can you shoot them down? Just wondering... Z07 writes: I read that in some southwestern states they shortened the duration of the yellow just a tick in order to get more revenue after installing the cameras. A judge ruled against them and they had to refund a bunch of money. I also read in this rag that a local person was timing the yellow duration and found that to be the case here. It's all about the money. It won't save one life. It may even cause more rearender type accidents. Using taxpayers money to settle a lawsuit, saying there was no taxpayer money, that it came from the violators. Well the violators are local taxpayers as far as I can determine. The violators are hard working citizens of this community, that get duped by the local government, using taxpayer money, to stick it to the taxpayers.
