WHEREAS, Diabetes is a chronic, incurob /e disease Mat affects more than twenty -six mil /ion
children and adults in Americo, about 8Z of the total popu/otron and almost 15% of
AfH/eav Americans; and,
WHEREAS, another 79 million Americans have pre- diabetes, a condition that puts Mm at the
highest risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, and,
WHEREAS, medico / statistics show that African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American
Indians, and some Asian Americans and Nbtfve Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders are
at particularly high risk for Type 2 diabetes and its complications; this includes o more
frequent d /oposes of Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents; and,
WHEREAS, in 2012, the ecovamic cost of diabetes and diabetes related eom#icatians to the United
States was estimated at $245 billion anon mlly; and,
WHEREAS, diabetes is generally under- reported on death certrficafts, particularly in the cases of
0/der persons with mu /tip /e chronic conditions such as heart disease and hypertension, so
Me toll of diabetes is believed to be much higher than officio //y reported; and,
WHEREAS, 25Z to 50Z of people with diabetes do not know that they have the disease and high-
risk ethnic groups are in great need of o mu/tti- lingual awareness campaign; and
1x,,HEREAS, since i991, me Interratrona/ Diabetes Federation and the Word Health Organization
have observed World Diabetes Day as on official United Notions World Heaft Day, and,
WHEREAS, this worldwide observed day inclu&s an increase in Comm m ty awareness of risk factors
and symptoms related to diabetes can improve the likelihood that people at risk for
developing diabetes receive the intervention they need, and,
WHEREAS, the Collier County a mnnunity is tuged to combat this disease and its life - threatening
compl/cations by familiarizing themselves with the diabetes warning signs, making healthy
Afestyle choices with respect to diet and activities, and by accessing the best quality of
care that Collier County provides to its citizens.
NOW THEREFORE, be it prow /aimed by tine Board of County Commissiamw of Collier Cowty, Florida,
that November 2013 be designated as
DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
