Gagnon – District 5 (absent) Lynne Nordhoff – District 2 ALSO PRESENT: Tanya Williams, Library Director Karen Tibbetts, Administrative Assistant Louise Franck, incoming Vice-President, Friends of the Library PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mrs. Murray asked for additions or corrections to the minutes of December 13, 2017. No corrections were noted. Mrs. Nordhoff moved to approve the minutes. Ms. Bettinger-Hennink seconded and the motion was carried unanimously. REPORT OF THE FRIENDS  Louise Franck reported that the Friends of the Library is working on a project that will benefit the community’s youth, ages middle school through young adult. The details have not yet been finalized, but she will provide updates.  The Friends of the Library Board will meet on Friday, January 19.  Mrs. Franck reported that author Dorthea Benton Frank, who spoke at the January 15 Nick Linn Lecture Series, surprised everyone by auctioning off a character to be featured in her next book to be released in 2019.  The raffle winner at the Nick Linn Lecture Series donated the winnings back to the Friends.  The Non-Fiction Author Series is working to increase revenue. REPORT OF OFFICERS – None COMMUNICATIONS a – Written – None b – Personal  Mrs. Murray reported that she was unable to attend the Naples Civic Association’s banquet, however she will look into having an invitation extended to Ms. Williams to attend their meeting.  The new venue for their meetings is the Player’s Club and Spa at Lely Resort.  Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Mrs. Murray reported that she heard a radio announcement for the Christian Church that meets at the South Regional Library. She did not hear a disclaimer.  She also heard radio announcements on the Friday preceding Saturday’s Stem Cell Event at the Naples Regional Library without a disclaimer. She added that she believes the announcement was made on two different radio station.  Discussion ensued and Ms. Williams will follow up with staff regarding room rental policies. PUBLIC COMMENTS – None UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1) Employee of the Month – January 28.A.3 Packet Pg. 673 Attachment: LAB Minutes - January 17 2018 (4926 : Library Advisory Board - February 21, 2018) 2  Mrs. Nordhoff nominated Barbie Schulze, Library Assistant at the Vanderbilt Beach Branch Library, as the January employee of the month. Mrs. White seconded the nomination and the motion passed unanimously. 2) Drawing for “Employee of the Year” and “Nominator of the Year”  Mrs. Nordhoff was selected to draw the winners, who will receive a ticket to one of the Nick Linn Lecture Series events sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  Nicole Duquette, Library Technician from the Estates Branch Library was selected as Employee of the Year.  Carey Hunt, Senior Supervisor from the Naples Regional Library was selected as Nominator of the Year. NEW BUSINESS 1) Volunteer Appreciation Events  Ms. Williams reported that the only locations to provide the dates for the Volunteer Appreciation Events were Marco Island, East Naples, and Golden Gate.  She is awaiting the other locations’ replies, and will have the information sent to everyone later this week. 2) 60 ½ Anniversary Event  Ms. Williams reported that the Library’s Anniversary Event has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 24.  The Library will feature a Progressive Party with the three regional locations featuring: o Naples Regional – 9 am Meet & Greet o Headquarters – 11 am Cake & Refreshments, Music by guitarist Richard Smith o South Regional – 1 pm Snacks & Refreshments  All library locations will participate in the following: o 1957 Bingo Reading Challenge o Hidden Golden Tickets o Collier County Public Library Photos & Stories shared by patrons GENERAL CONSIDERATION  Ms. Bettinger-Hennink recalled in the past that there would be three shelves designated for new mysteries, however, she noticed that there were no new mystery books on display recently.  Where are the books?  Ms. Williams reported that new materials are coming. She further explained that orders were delayed due to hurricane Irma as well as new purchasing processes that were implemented by the County’s Procurement Department.  She added that the Library pulls new books down after six months, however, staff creatively designed displays to fill the space in the interim.  Ms. Williams reported that many residents returned to their homes earlier this year to check on any hurricane damage. This added to the increase in demand for new materials.  Ms. Bettinger-Hennink would like to compliment the Library on the displays that were created when author Sue Grafton passed away. She added that she was pleased to learn that Mrs. Grafton’s facebook page is being maintained by her daughters. DIRECTOR’S REPORT 1) Staffing Update  Ms. Williams reported that Sandy Thompson, Library Assistant at the East Naples Branch Library will be retiring on January 18. There will be cake and refreshments from noon to 2pm, and all are welcome to stop by. Sandy was with the library for ten years.  Julie Blatt has been the Branch Manager for the East Naples Branch Library for two weeks.  Susan Maunz has been the Branch Manager for the Estates Branch Library for two weeks.  Brenda Rasch started last Monday as the new Branch Manager at the Marco Island Branch Library. 28.A.3 Packet Pg. 674 Attachment: LAB Minutes - January 17 2018 (4926 : Library Advisory Board - February 21, 2018) 3  Carey Hunt began as Senior Supervisor at the Naples Regional Library, and will continue providing technical knowledge and support along with Janet Pereira.  Interviews for Carey’s replacement as Senior Supervisor of Acquisitions will begin later today.  Ms. Williams has created two plans regarding a Branch Manager at the Immokalee Branch Library. She will update everyone regarding the progress.  Ms. Williams would like to use the open Program Specialist position to recruit someone for teen services. She added that this may be a good promotional opportunity for existing staff.  A new LEAP student is pending for the Vanderbilt Beach Branch Library.  Each location, with the exception of Estates and Everglades City, has a LEAP student.  The Library may consider hiring one for the Estates, or to have a current student relocated. Another option being considered is to double-up at one location, depending on the needs of patrons.  Ms. Williams is considering advocating to reinstate the part-time Library Page position. 2) 1Q Report  Ms. Williams distributed copies of FY 2018 1st Quarter Statistics.  She reported that: o Statistics for new patrons is trending upward. o Over 11,000 items were added to the collection. o Virtual visits were over 600,000. This includes catalog and website searches. o Door count statistics do not include Everglades City, as the building is used for more purposes than a library. o Although the circulation of physical items is low, ebook circulations are trending up..  Ms. Williams reported that the Library received over $8500 in monetary donations during the month of December.  Ms. Williams clarified some of the eResources. o EBSCO is an electronic book (eBook) service o Many of their items are non-fiction and academic o Items can be searched in the Library catalog o Novelist Plus allows for patrons to search for books and authors that are similar to ones that they enjoy. o Hoopla has not been heavily promoted as it is fairly expensive, and the Library currently does not have a budget for Hoopla. o Hoopla is popular with teens as it offers comic books and manga  Mrs. White asked about the new Library website, which is expected to start sometime in February.  Ms. Williams wants to make certain that staff are well versed with it before announcements are made publicly. 3) Update of Phase 3 of RFID  Ms. Williams reported that self check-outs have been installed at all locations.  She added that patrons were more receptive at the last four locations.  The adjustments to the security gates should be completed within the next couple of weeks.  The Immokalee security gate is narrow as it is located at a single door entry.  Discussion ensued regarding activating a self-payment option on the kiosks.  Ms. Williams stated that the County wants to standardize the way credit card payments are made and to ensure that PCI compliances are met.  The RFID project began in 2014 with a 5-year completion, so the Library is ahead of schedule. ADJOURNMENT Mrs. Murray asked if there was any more business to discuss. There being no further business to come before the Library Advisory Board, Mrs. White moved to adjourn, Ms. Bettinger-Hennink seconded and the motion was carried unanimously.
