GENERAL CONSIDERATION
Ms. Bettinger-Hennink recalled in the past that there would be three shelves designated for new
mysteries, however, she noticed that there were no new mystery books on display recently.
Where are the books?
Ms. Williams reported that new materials are coming. She further explained that orders were
delayed due to hurricane Irma as well as new purchasing processes that were implemented by
the County’s Procurement Department.
She added that the Library pulls new books down after six months, however, staff creatively
designed displays to fill the space in the interim.
Ms. Williams reported that many residents returned to their homes earlier this year to check on
any hurricane damage. This added to the increase in demand for new materials.
Ms. Bettinger-Hennink would like to compliment the Library on the displays that were created
when author Sue Grafton passed away. She added that she was pleased to learn that Mrs.
Grafton’s facebook page is being maintained by her daughters.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
1) Staffing Update

Library will be retiring on January 18. There will be cake and refreshments from noon to 2pm,
and all are welcome to stop by. Sandy was with the library for ten years.

Carey Hunt began as Senior Supervisor at the Naples Regional Library, and will continue
providing technical knowledge and support along with Janet Pereira.
Interviews for Carey’s replacement as Senior Supervisor of Acquisitions will begin later today.
Ms. Williams has created two plans regarding a Branch Manager at the Immokalee Branch
Library. She will update everyone regarding the progress.
Ms. Williams would like to use the open Program Specialist position to recruit someone for
teen services. She added that this may be a good promotional opportunity for existing staff.
A new LEAP student is pending for the Vanderbilt Beach Branch Library.
Each location, with the exception of Estates and Everglades City, has a LEAP student.
The Library may consider hiring one for the Estates, or to have a current student relocated.
Another option being considered is to double-up at one location, depending on the needs of
patrons.
Ms. Williams is considering advocating to reinstate the part-time Library Page position.
2) 1Q Report
Ms. Williams distributed copies of FY 2018 1st Quarter Statistics.
She reported that:
o Statistics for new patrons is trending upward.
o Over 11,000 items were added to the collection.
o Virtual visits were over 600,000. This includes catalog and website searches.
o Door count statistics do not include Everglades City, as the building is used for more
purposes than a library.
o Although the circulation of physical items is low, ebook circulations are trending up..
Ms. Williams reported that the Library received over $8500 in monetary donations during the
month of December.
Ms. Williams clarified some of the eResources.
o EBSCO is an electronic book (eBook) service
o Many of their items are non-fiction and academic
o Items can be searched in the Library catalog
o Novelist Plus allows for patrons to search for books and authors that are similar to ones
that they enjoy.
o Hoopla has not been heavily promoted as it is fairly expensive, and the Library currently
does not have a budget for Hoopla.
o Hoopla is popular with teens as it offers comic books and manga
Mrs. White asked about the new Library website, which is expected to start sometime in
February.
Ms. Williams wants to make certain that staff are well versed with it before announcements
are made publicly.
3) Update of Phase 3 of RFID
Ms. Williams reported that self check-outs have been installed at all locations.
She added that patrons were more receptive at the last four locations.
The adjustments to the security gates should be completed within the next couple of weeks.
The Immokalee security gate is narrow as it is located at a single door entry.
Discussion ensued regarding activating a self-payment option on the kiosks.
Ms. Williams stated that the County wants to standardize the way credit card payments are
made and to ensure that PCI compliances are met.
The RFID project began in 2014 with a 5-year completion, so the Library is ahead of schedule.
