WHEREAS, on behalf of the residents of Collier County, the Board of Collier County Commissioners would
like to honor Mr. Nick Hale for his service to his family, our community and our country; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Hale was a devoted husband to his wife of 38 years, Denise, and a proud father and
grandfather to his son William Nicoll Hale IZT, and granddaughter Aijah; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Hale, a Baltimore native, had a dedication to our country, enlisting in the United States
Army in 1943 upon his graduation from Baltimore City College, and was assigned to the First
Infantry Division in Europe; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Hale served admirably as part of the First Infantry Division, including fighting at Omaha
Beach on D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and later serving as one of the Officers-of-the-Day
during the Nuremberg Trials; and,
WHEREAS, that life-altering experience as a soldier gave him a deeper appreciation for his fellow service
members, his country and his freedom, and he continued to serve in the Army Reserve, retiring
as a Colonel in 1975. During this latter service, he commanded the support group for the first
Inter-allied Confederation of Reserve Officers meeting (CIOR) in Washington D.C.; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Hale received numerous decorations for his service, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star,
Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and the French Legion of Honor; and,
WHEREAS, he dedicated himself to improving the Collier County community, where he moved in 1992, by
getting involved with Collier County government and community service groups, including as a
board member of the Friends of the Collier County Museum, a member of the Reserve Officers
Association and the Military Officers Association of America and the Holocaust Museum of
Southwest Florida; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Hale was willing to share his story and his World War II experiences with community
groups, students and county residents through the Collier County World War II Capture Living
History project. He participated in an Honor Flight in Washington, D.C., and enjoyed spending
time at Homer Helter's Military Museum with his fellow veterans, and,
WHEREAS, it is with sadness, but great honor that we remember Mr. Hale for his true commitment to
Co/lien County and our country.
NOW THEREFORE, let it be proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that October 27, 2015 be designated as
NICK HALE DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 27th Day of October 2015.
