PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, 50 years ago on the 7th day of February 1968, in a Special Message
to the Congress, President Lyndon Johnson recommended a proposal
to make the ordinary telephone more effective for the American
people to summon help in emergency situations; and,
WHEREAS, 50 years ago on the 16th day of February 1968, the very first
911 call in the nation was placed in Haleyville, Alabama; and,
WHEREAS, 40 years ago on the 14th day of February 1978, the 911 emergency
number system was established in Collier County allowing citizens to
reach emergency services directly; and,
WHEREAS, on the 19th day of April 2005, Collier County could receive location
information via phase two coordinates from 100 percent of major
wireless phone carriers; and,
WHEREAS, on the 14th day of June 2014, Collier County began receiving 911
SMS allowing citizens to text to 911 in emergency situations; and,
WHEREAS, today Collier County has more than 100 911 professionals working on
the cutting edge of innovation, dedicated to protecting the safety
and security of the citizens of Collier County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of
Collier County, Florida, that February 14, 2018, be designated as
the
40th ANNIVERSARY OF 911 EMERGENCY CALL SYSTEM
IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 13th Day of February 2018.
