Agenda 01/09/2018 Item # 3D01/09/2018
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to recognize Christopher D'Arco, Environmental Specialist, Senior, Growth
Management Department as the 2017 Employee of the Year.
OBJECTIVE: To recognize the efforts and accomplishments of an employee who has made significant
contributions to the organization or to our community. The Employee of the Year is chosen by the
Employee of the Month Committee, from that year’s Employee of the Month winners.
CONSIDERATIONS: Chris D'Arco, Environmental Specialist Sr., received the “Employee of the
Month” for January 2017. He has been with the County since 2006 and works for the Growth
Management Department.
Chris has accepted the responsibility of shorebird monitoring in addition to his regular duties as Senior
Environmental Specialist in Coastal Zone Management, saving the County the cost of contracting this
activity as required by federal permitting, and adding flexibility, monitoring skills and cost savings to the
department. He has accepted the principle role of biological monitoring specialist within the county,
working with our consultants to identify, categorize and document near shore coral outcroppings in Collier
County's near shore beach habitat. Chris's efforts have saved the County many thousands of dollars as this is
a yearly activity required by permit. Chris has been relentless in working with the Estuary Conservation
Association to reposition navigational markers to support public safety and safe boating within the
Wiggins Pass Estuary. He was Collier County's Project Manager on the Artificial Reef program that restores
habitat and rebuilds fish populations. In accomplishing this, Chris worked weekends, nights and every
spare moment to obtain permits, assure grant compliance, accomplish deployment and perform monitoring
of this award-winning program that highlights Collier County and our off-shore environment. In addition to
all these accomplishments Chris also found the time to complete a scientific diver program, provide support
to the manatee protection program, and purchase a work vessel to assure safe waterside operations. Chris is
not only a credit to our organization, but to the community he serves, and is very deserving of the Employee
of the Year award.
FISCAL IMPACT: The selected “Employee of the Year” receives a $250.00 cash award. Funds for this
are available in the Human Resources Budget for this program.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management Impacts associated with
this Executive Summary.
RECOMMENDATION: To approve the recognition of Christopher D'Arco as Employee of the Year for
2017.
