EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve a loan agreement from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of
Archaeology and Anthropology allowing the Collier County Museums and the Marco Island
Historical Society to borrow significant artifacts found on Marco Island during the 1896 Pepper-
Hearst Archaeological Expedition for a temporary exhibit at the Marco Island Historical Museum,
correcting a scrivener’s error in the agreement previously approved by the Board.
OBJECTIVE: To return to Marco Island, temporarily, significant artifacts found during the 1896
Pepper-Hearst Archaeological Expedition.
CONSIDERATIONS: On June 27, 2017, the Board approved loan agreements from the Smithsonian
Institution's National Museum of Natural History and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of
Archaeology and Anthropology allowing the Museum Division and the Marco Island Historical Society
to borrow significant artifacts found on Marco Island during the 1896 Pepper-Hearst Archaeological
Expedition for a temporary exhibit at the Marco Island Historical Museum and approved a Memorandum
of Understanding outlining each organization’s roles and responsibilities in hosting the exhibition
(Agenda item 16D16).
After execution of the loan agreement from the University of Pennsylvania, it was discovered that the
agreement as approved included the wrong dates for the loan period. The agreement as approved listed
the loan period as November 13, 2017 to November 13, 2019. The correct loan period is November 12,
2018 to November 13, 2020.
The University of Pennsylvania has provided a corrected document to be approved and executed by the
Board and the Marco Island Historic Society.
FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with approving the corrected loan agreement.
The Board previously reviewed and approved the fiscal impact associated with this project (Board
meeting 6/27/17, Agenda item 16D16).
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to
form and legality, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
