P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, September is Hunger Action Month nationwide, with September 14
designated as Hunger Action Day; and,
WHEREAS, Hunger Action Month is a hunger awareness campaign started by the
Feeding America network of food banks, which includes the Harry
Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County is one of five Southwest Florida counties the Harry
Chapin Food Bank serves; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County has approximately 40,000 people who are food insecure,
which means a person may not know where his or her next meal is
coming from, according to Feeding America’s 2016 Map the Meal Gap
study; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 14,600 of those 40,000 people are children; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank has increased food distribution 93 percent
in Collier County since 2013, with 4.8 million pounds distributed last
fiscal year; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank provides food to more than 30 nonprofit
agencies in Collier County through Fulfill, its mobile pantry program;
and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank is expanding its Collier County operations
to a new 13,500 square-foot warehouse in Naples, which will help the
food bank provide more food, volunteer opportunities and space to
collaborate with the community; and,
WHEREAS, the Harry Chapin Food Bank encourages Collier County citizens to
continue to volunteer, advocate and donate to help end hunger in Collier
County; and,
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that September 14, 2017, be designated as
HUNGER ACTION DAY IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 12th Day of September, 2017.
