Basics of SW Florida Estuarine Ecology
Gary Lylton
Rookery Bay Rese~'e
refuge for wildlife
Seagrasses
· stabilize bottom sediments
· absorb nutrients from land runoff
· support fish and inve~ebrates
Oyster bars
· filter water and absorb
nutrients
· provide substrate and shelter
for invertebrates, and food for
fish and birds
· indicator of estuarine health
Barrier Islands
· constantly shifting due to waves, currents and storm events
· protect estuaries from harsh elements
· serve as essential nesting grounds for shorebirds and sea turtles
150 species of birds
227 species of fish
Boating
Collier County 2002:
· over 22,000 registered boaters
· boating industry grossed over $200 million in economic impact
She!Irish and finfish: ill~.a~
· In 2001, seagrass communities in Florida supported an
estimated harvest orS117 million in shellfish and finfish
Recreational Fisheries
In 2001:
· Florida anglers spent $4.1
billion on fishing expenses
· Collier County sold
53,443 saltwater fishing
licenses totaling $600,362
Tourism generated S859 million
in Collier County in 2002
Coastal development has resulted in loss of wetiand habitat
Past: natural freshwater flows
Current: Altered freshwater flows
Future: Restored freshwater flows
Water quality degradation
· stormwater runoff
· contamination/health advisories
invasives ~
· outcompete natives for resources
· create monocultures lacking
benefits to native species
· difficult to control
Boating impacts
· Over 173,000 acres of seagrass beds in Florida have been
damaged by propellers
· Six manatees died in Collier County due to boat collisions in 2002

Studying
Envir ;cience
· Natural systems are d
· Multiple interactive factors.
· Historically contingent.
· Requires study over long period:
time.
· Not easily studied experimentally.
Enviror Science...
· Even the best science ult in high
levels of uncertainty.
· Hypotheses often require
testing.
· Correlation vs. cause / effect.
· Science not necessarily a panacea.
· Despite limitations science gets the jot:
done.
· Management should make i]~.f best
science available. .
· When level of uncert.a'mty is low,'~
management alternatives are clear.
· When uncertainty high, managemen~
decision should be conservative (err

Problems Testing the
Hypothesis
· From where are the
nutrients originating.9
· No prehistoric data:
can't determine natural

· Spurious vs. authentic
