Agenda 06/27/2017 Item #16D 306/27/2017
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve the electronic submittal of a funding assistance proposal to the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Invasive Plant Management Section for
contractor services during FY 2018 to treat invasive exotic vegetation within Conservation Collier’s
Red Maple Swamp Preserve.
OBJECTIVE: To maintain Red Maple Swamp Preserve free of invasive, exotic plants.
CONSIDERATIONS: The Invasive Plant Management Section (IPMS) of the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Commission (FWC) funds individual invasive plant removal projects on public conservation lands
throughout the State. If funding assistance is received, IMPS will pay State contractors to treat invasive,
exotic plants within Red Maple Swamp Preserve during FY 2018 - work worth approximately $50,000.
No funds will be transferred to Collier County. If funding assistance is awarded, a formal agreement
between the Board of County Commissioners and the State will not be required for the project to proceed.
FISCAL IMPACT: If funding assistance is awarded, it will save the Conservation Collier Program
approximately $50,000, which is proposed for Red Maple Swamp Preserve exotic plant treatment in the
FY18 Conservation Collier Land Management Fund 174 budget.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: This proposal supports Objectives 6.2 and 7.3 of the
Conservation and Coastal Management Element of the County Growth Management Plan, which require
the County to protect and conserve wetlands and the natural functions of wetlands and continue to
implement programs that conserve and protect endangered and threatened wildlife species.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been approved for form and legality and requires
majority vote for approval. - JAB
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners approves the electronic submittal of
a funding assistance proposal to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Invasive Plant
Management Section for contractor services during FY 2018 to treat invasive exotic vegetatio n within
Red Maple Swamp Preserve.
