WHEREAS, members of the United States Armed Forces defend citizens'rights to life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and protect us from harm at home and
abroad; and,
WHEREAS, providing services and opportunities for military families and their children are
top priorities of Collier County and the Collier County Veteran Services
Division; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County residents have a proud history of service in the United States
Armed Forces in times of peace and war; and,
WHEREAS, many Collier County residents continue to serve on active duty, in the National
Guard, and in the reserve components of the United States Armed Forces;
and,
WHEREAS, there are more than 29,000 veterans currently residing in Collier County,
nearly 8 percent of our population; and,
WHEREAS, on April 20, 1999, the Senate passed S. Res. 33 (106th Congress) as National
Military Appreciation Month, calling on the people of the United States, in a
symbolic act of unity, to observe a National Military Appreciation Month in
May to honor the current and former members of the Armed Forces, including
those who have died in the pursuit of freedom and peace; and,
WHEREAS,it is important to emphasize to the people of Collier County the relevance of
the history and activities of the Armed Forces. The month of May was
selected for this display of patriotism because we celebrate Victory in Europe
(VE) Day, Military Spouse Day, Loyalty Day, Armed Forces Day/Week and
Memorial Day during this month; and,
WHEREAS, the Collier County Board of County Commissioners wishes to recognize and
honor all members of the United States Armed Forces, past and present, as
well as their families for their service and sacrifice.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that May 2017 be designated as
MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH IN COLLIER COUNTY
