WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Savarese, Coastal Geologist, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Dr. Peter Sheng, Coastal Engineer, University of Florida, and a group of geoscientists,computer modelers, social scientists,and ecologists have submitted a proposal to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science,RFP: NOAA-NOS-NCCOS-2017-00487;and WHEREAS, The participating academic and government institutions have proposed a study to predict the impact of near-future sea-level rise and storm surge on the coastal natural and human resources of Collier County, Florida; and WHEREAS, the purpose of the study is to provide natural resource managers, including elected and appointed officials of Collier County, Florida, with tools that may be used in the public decision-making process regarding adaptation to a changing coastal environment;and WHEREAS,it is the intent of the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida (Board of County Commissioners) to help citizens become more aware of any consequences, both social and environmental, that may result from the impact of near-future sea-level rise and storm surge; and to assist the community and its policy-makers to develop appropriate planning strategies; and WHEREAS,the proposed study, funded by a near$1.0 million allocation,with a three-year duration, will be of significant value to Collier County, its municipalities, and its natural resource managers and not-for-profit environmental organizations. 1 6 A 51 NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF COLLIER COUNTY,FLORIDA,that: 1. That the Board of County Commissioners supports funding for the study, A Web- Based Interactive Decision-Support Tool for Coastal Resilience and Ecosystem Restoration in Southwest Florida by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Ocean Service. 2. That the Board of County Commissioners intends to utilize the results of the study to formulate strategies appropriate for the impacts of sea-level rise and storm- surge. 3. This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption. This Resolution is adopted after motion; second and majority vote favoring same, this 13th day of September,2016.
