PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, The National Park Service was created by Congress and President Woodrow Wilson on August 25, 1916, with the responsibility for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments then managed by the department and those yet to be established, 'which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations"; and, WHEREAS, Whereas the National Park System now comprises of more than 400 areas covering more than 84 million acres in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Saipan and the Virgin Islands and employ more than 20,000 National Park Service employees who manage these National Parks; and, WHEREAS, Today, the National Parks Service works with communities across the nation to help promote conservation and preserve local history, create close-to-home recreational opportunities and are major drivers to their local economies; and, WHEREAS, Collier County is fortunate to be home to Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, and in close proximity to Dry Tortugas National Park, and Biscayne National Park; and, WHEREAS, Our National Parks System is generally acknowledged as one of 'America's Best Ideas' WHEREAS, On August 25, 2016, The National Parks Service celebrates its 100'h Anniversary and everyone is invited to take part in the Celebration, NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that the year following August 2016 be designated as National Park Service Centennial Year in Collier County.
