Thank you from the men and women of your CAP Squadron of Marco Island. The Marco Island Civil Air Patrol Squadron is a group of over 65 volunteers - men and women, who give their time, talents and personal financial resources to keep your community safe. Beyond members' funds and volunteer hours, the Marco Squadron relies on community donations to meet essential annual operating expenses. The Squadron's assets (planes, vehicles, and building) are provided by the U.S. Air Force, but we are charged with most of their operating costs which are significant. Marco Island's geographic location is adjacent to the wilderness areas of the Everglades, and the 10,000 Islands which are heavily used by kayaks, canoes, and small boats. This is the reason CAP Coastal Patrols along the Wilderness Waterways are so important to keep these boaters safe. Each patrol costs approximately $200.00 for fuel and airplane maintenance. Your contributions sustain these vital operations as well as defray costs associated with our 6,000- square-foot hangar (land lease, utilities, maintenance, insurance). They also support a vibrant CAP youth cadet program. In recent years, CAP's Air Force funding has been reduced making donations even more important. Search and Rescue: In 2013 CAP members saved countless lives across America. We are charged with searching for 95% of overdue aircraft over land in the United States and its territories. The CAP also helps the Coast Guard search off shore when called upon in time of need.We also train ground teams to search for lost or injured people, hikers or children in the remote wilderness areas of the Everglades National Park and the surrounding terrain of South Florida. In 2013 Marco Squadron was called upon to participate in these missions as well as spotting remote fires. We fly over the 10,000 Islands multiple times per month year round to help those in need. Disaster Relief: After hurricanes or other disasters, we work very closely with the Collier County Emergency Management Department to provide damage assessments. We have expanded our communications capabilities and have been training our members to become more experienced mission ready pilots, observers, photographers and scanners. As an example, during the disastrous British Petroleum oil spill, CAP was called upon to fly over Northwestern Florida to assist in beach patrols and photographing oil slicks. Cadet Program: Designed for boys and girls in the 12 to 21 year age range, the cadet program provides young people with a well-rounded education in aerospace technology, physical training, moral leadership, initial flight experience and military discipline. In this area we have one Cadet Squadron in the Marco/Naples area. This is a stand-alone squadron which Marco CAP members support with orientation flying (powered aircraft and gliders alike). Homeland Security: The Civil Air Patrol, through our service with the U.S. Air Force, has become aligned with the Department of Homeland Security. We also perform Air Force assistance missions by flying target for the training of their fighter and attack pilots. Through this work our Marco Island Squadron serves as an integral part of this important effort of protecting our borders. For over 30 years, the Marco Island CAP Squadron has provided community service to Southwest Florida. We need your support to help us continue these important missions. CAP is a 501(c) (3) organization, allowing your donation to be tax deductible. Please use the enclosed envelope to send the most generous donation you can to the address above.
