Bordered on the west by 8,200 feet of Gulf beach and sand dunes. Rich vegetation and wildlife abound. Who are the Friends ? A non-profit organization of over 500 dues-paying individuals who are concerned about the precious marine and wetland environment. What is our purpose ? To preserve, protect and enhance natural features. To foster research and educational endeavors. To secure volunteers to assist the County. To distribute literature relating to the Preserve. What are we doing ? [] Nature Trail: Grooming a mile long trail winding from the end of the paved road to Wiggins Pass. Clearing out exotic plants and replacing them with natural species. Erecting directional signs, making benches, identifying vegetation and providing a descriptive booklet. [] Education: A well-attended program has been conducted for the past six years, including lectures and nature walks, providing recreation and 4 education for thousands of local residents and visitors. [] Learning Center: This six hundred square foot structure has been built, staffed and maintained by the Friends without the use of tax dollars. [] Displays: Individual members have developed posters which are exhibited on a rotating basis in eight wall-mounted cases. Unique shell collections are on permanent display. Plant specimens from the trail and marine species from the beach are arranged as table clinics. A library is maintained for the use of visitors who wish to identify specimens and explore books for adults and children on elements of this habitat. [] Tortoise Sanctuary: We are cooperating in a study of the population, distribution and habitat of the gopher tortoise, an endangered species which is protected from the inroads of civilization in the Preserve. [] Osprey Platforms: Three poles and platforms for Ospreys have been constructed and installed. Ospreys have taken possession and reared families in two of the nests. The third is occupied by a couple who have not yet had a family. [] Aquatic Garden: Construction, planting and maintenance of an aquatic garden featuring native butterfly attracting plants. [] Purple Martin Colony: Construction and maintenance of houses for a purple martin colony is our project for the 1997-98 season. What can you do ? —JOIN THE "FRIENDS" OF BAREFOOT BEACH ! Docents, gardeners, trailblazers, leaf pickers, and can crushers--all the volunteers who have worked so zealously and joyfully to make the Friends program such a success. Last month we welcomed a delegation from Tiger Tail Park. The County is encouraging the Marco Island residents to organize a Friends group like ours. We went over our dazzling history, offered to help, and wished them luck. We are reminded that "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery." One last business matter. Its about dues again. Sorry. Treasurer Bobbe Hickman and Associate Treasurer Bill Schwantes report that we are solvent, and our Auditor,Leah Lewis, tells us that our books are in order. But, there is still a problem with a few Friends who have not renewed their memberships at this late date. To enable us to move on to exciting new ventures,we just need for everyone to pay their dues. Oh, it's in the mail! Thank you! Now to the big news. The Purple Martin Sanctuary is in place just south of the Learning Center! Thanks to Bill Dietrich's expertise and the hard work of Jack MacDonald,Nelson Blackburn and Bob Dienes, the pole went up in record time. There are twelve apartments and four gourd cottages ready for occupancy. This was a real community effort. Bill provided the diatomaceous earth and coir(a stiff coarse fiber from the outer husk of a coconut)for the flooring, Nelson provided the ladder and the drill bits,Dick Breeden provided the level, and Leon provided the extension cord. This place is for the birds! Thank you,Jack,et. aL Ranger Andy has constructed another of his comfy benches and placed it in a direct sight line for leisurely bird watching. Andy has added some very interesting driftwood. A few flower pots, and voila! a lovely garden. About Purple Martins: Purple Martins are members of the Swallow family(Hirundiniae), more specifically Progue subis. The male is blue black in color, the female dull black and grayish. These large, jolly swallows are commonly seen in cities and towns. Originally they dwelt in hollow 4 frees,as some still do, but the majority now live in houses built especially for them,or in cornices of dwellings or barns. Martin houses often consist of cunningly fashioned gabled structures atop a twelve foot pole, but the birds are as well satisisfied with soapboxes or gourds with holes in the side. 4 ask March 28 All About Bats Cyndi Marks April 4 Trees of South Florida Seth MacDonald April 11 Art of Shellcraft Irene Lindquist The County has been involved with a major effort to remove exotic species from the Preserve, specifically Brazilian Pepper and Australian Pine. Tons and tons of Brazilian Peppers have been cut and shredded, clearing a beautiful shady path all the way to the Pass, looping and connecting to the Nature Trail. It is eerie in there- the floor is mulched and feels so good under foot. It is a pristine, spooky wilderness. Unfortunately the choppings and chippings are full of Brazilian Pepper berries which will end up as seeds, and then seedlings. Familiar job ahead? That's how we got started years ago, clearing Brazilian Peppers under Dick Dempsey's leadership. We may have to do it again! Miscellaneous Chit Chat Thanks to Tom Crowe for doing such a fine job as Director of Public Relations. Tom is writing the publicity releases and getting plenty of"good ink" in the papers,a sure sign that they like his stuff. Thanks to Milton Katz,Bob Mansfield,Buck Pawlikowsky,Harold Saylor,Ray Steinberg for accepting such a crushing responsibility. (Whom did we neglect to mention? Surely one or more.) Erwin and Joan Schaeffer arrived late in December, trailing their trailer behind them, ready and willing to load up the recyclables. What a blessing it is to have their help. Thanks loads! What a great job Marianne Sander is doing juggling the fourteen sessions and thirty six docents. Marianne accomplishes this with finesse, dignity and grace. Docents: Please try to arrange for your own substitutes when you cannot make your regular sessions. Jean Sable is back after world wide travels and countless foreign correspondence reports to Leon. In April she spent 3 weeks on a kibbutz, washing down tanks, getting them ready for service on the Golan. Tel Aviv is safe! Jean is on the job! Here at the Preserve Jean is girl Friday, weeding, watering and working at the Learning Center. Dr.Jill Kusba has been assisting the County in a major survey of the population and habitat of the local gopher tortoises. She has been joined recently by Nan Gerhardt and Andy Rennig. Ray Steinberg has been helping Jill in the past year. New technology includes fiberoptic photography of the tunnels and burrows! Thanks to Bob Dienes and Reggie Zielinski for hanging the drapes every Saturday before the lectures. Thanks to Bob and Phyllis DeHuete for the lovely laser red dot pointer. We are becoming so sophisticated! Wish someone would fund roll-up shutters. Well, someday. The Preston Heald osprey nest has a live-in couple, but so far there is no sign of a family. Mary Schoedinger, whose neighboring birds always produce offspring, has offered to send husband Bill scrambling up the pole to explain how it's done.
