' 1/1 I Hypothalamus—its hormones govern physiologic functions such as temperature, regulation, thirst, hunger, sleep, mood, sex drive and the release of other hormones within the body. Prompts the pituitary gland to act. It is also involved in behavioral and autonomic processes of the body. Pituitary Gland-Controls the thyroid gland..Monitors the amount of thyroid hormone in your blood and sends messages for regulation. It stimulates the adrenal glands, and Growth hormone, which regulates growth, metabolism and body composition. It secretes hormones for the ovaries and testes. Thyroid—produces hormones, which regulate the body's metabolic rate-determines how fast or slow your brain, heart, muscles, liver and other parts of your body work, as well as digestive function, muscle control, brain development and bone maintenance. Parathyroid—This gland is actually 4 tiny glands in the neck that control the body's calcium levels. It produces PTH (parathyroid hormone). It controls how much calcium is in our bones, and how much calcium is in our blood. Calcium is essential to life and is used primarily for three things: 1. To provide the electrical energy for our nervous system. This is its most important function. It provides the means for electrical impulses to travel along nerves. This is why the most common symptoms of parathyroid disease are related to the nervous system (depression, weakness, tiredness, etc.) 2. To provide the electrical energy for our muscular system (When not correct, feel week and have muscle cramps and spasms) 3. To provide strength to our skeletal system. (Secondary to providing the proper functioning of our nervous system). Adrenals Help regulate your reaction to stress. (Through Cortisol) Also helps regulate your metabolism, sugar levels and blood pressure. The adrenals are controlled by the pituitary gland. Pineal Produces melatonin, which affects the modulation of sleep patterns in both seasonal and circadian rhythms. Reproductive Glands (including the ovaries and testes)The ovaries, in addition to producing the egg cells for reproduction, produce estrogen and progesterone. Estrogens are also responsible for good bone health and strength. The testes produce testosterone and support sperm production. Testosterone is also responsible for good bone health and strength in men. Pancreas This gland produces enzymes into the small intestine to further break down food for digestion. It also produces the hormone insulin and secretes it into the bloodstream in order to regulate the body's glucose or sugar level. These glands produce over 20 major hormones (which are the body's chemical messengers)and send them directly into the bloodstream, transferring information and instructions from one set of cells to another. It's a network that regulates metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, mood and sleep...among other things. The endocrine system and its hormones influence almost every cell, organ and function of our bodies. It's in charge of body processes that happen SLOWLY..such as cell growth. The FASTER processes like breathing and body movement are controlled by the nervous system. So the Endocrine system is separate from the nervous system..yet they often work together to help the body function properly.
