RECOMMENDATION FOR APPROVAL TO APPLY FOR A GRANT FROM THE STATE OF
FLORIDA TO PROVIDE LUNCHES FOR IMMOKALEE SUMMER RECREATION
PARTICIPANTS
Objective: To gain Board approval to apply for a grant with the
State of Florida and County School System to provide lunches for
participants of the Immokalee Summer Recreation Program and allow
the Parks and Recreation Director to act as the County's liaison
officer to administer the grant if received .
Considerations : The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was
established to ensure that during school vacation , various agencies
would be able to provide the same high quality meals provided during
the school year by the National School Lunch and School Breakfast
Programs. The program resulted from an increased awareness
providing proper nutrition . SFSP makes meals available to children
eighteen ( 18) and under free of charge .
Organizations that may sponsor the SFSP are limited to :
1 . Public or private non-profit school food authorities and
residential summer camps .
2. State , local , municipal or county government entities
- provided that these entities certify that they will directly

`~ operate the program at each site under the sponsorship .
The sponsor will be responsible for supervising site staff and
managing program operations at sites during the period of the
program participation - in this case six (6) weeks .
Sponsors of the SFSP receive state funds based on the number of
meals the County School System serves to the children .
Reimbursement rates have been established to reflect the costs of
administering the program . Sponsors may claim reimbursement for
only those meals served to the children participating in the County
Summer Recreation Program who are eligible for free or reduced price
meals under the National School or School Breakfast Programs .
Immokalee is 100% eligible for the SFSP .
The SFSP has been successfully administered by the Parks and
Recreation Department for the past four (4) years . Last summer the
grant provided 7 ,000 youths with lunches . This summer we expect to
- provide c l ose to 7 ,500 l unc h es . Immokalee School personne l will be
preparing the lunches .
Fiscal Impact : There is no fiscal impact . The program is fully
funded by the Federal Government .
Recommendation : The staff recommends that the Board of County
Commissioners allow the Parks and Recreation Department to file for
the SFSP grant as described above for the 1988 Summer Program and
appoint the Parks and Recreation Director as the County's liaison
-~
`
officer to administer the ceived .

Little League teams
need regulation fields
Editor, Naples Daily News:
It's great that there are many people
who support the idea of a professional
baseball team in Naples and Commis-
sioner Pistor is really doing his home-
work.
Lest we all get caught up•in how won-
derful this could be, we need to look in
our own county at the other needs for
baseball fields. Major leaguers grew up
playing on Little League (and) Babe Ruth
teams. At present, hundreds of volun-
teers run these leagues and raise their
own funds each year.
There is a crying need for diamonds on
which to play. Most people don't know
that Collier County has not provided a
regulation-size field that can match the
city-owned Fleischmann Park diamond
that is overcrowded with both high
school and Babe Ruth games.
As a league, we had no choice but to
send four teams of boys to Lee County in
order to have them play. You don't have
to ask parents if going to play on Fort
Myers Beach is unreasonable and ridicu-
lous (especially in the season)!
It's just fine to get all fired up about
major league baseball, but let's get going
in this county, and take care of the needs
of the taxpayers that have children ages 9
to 15. Take a ride out to the new county
parks in North Naples and Golden Gate:
where's the baseball field?
Donna Mihailoff

Editor's Note: The baseball facility, with
four regulation practice fields, would be -
available to Little League and Babe Ruth
League teams if built.

Mr. Clifford Crawford
Division of Parks and Recreation
Collier County Florida
Naples , F1 .
Dear Mr. Crawford,
I have been asked by a committee of concerned citizens and
parents of little league age boys and girls to appear before
the Advisory Board and petition for budgetary consideration
for the funds necessary to build and light a third baseball
field at the county park on Santa Barbara Boulevard .
As you are aware the Gulfcoast Little League owns two baseball
fields in the Lely Estates Subdivision . Growth, both in the
East Naples area and in Golden Gate has caused severe
overcrowding to the point that the league now uses county
fields as much as its own fields . Considering the growth
history of the Golden Gate area and future growth
projections , the Board of Directors of Gulfcoast Little League
has recommended that a separate league be considered for the
Golden Gate Area .
There are currently over 400 participants in the Gulfcoast Little
League from the Golden Gate . Many more will enter the
threshold age based on school membership projections for 1988-
89 . It is also anticipated that many more youngsters will
participate in the little league program if it closer to home .
We are particularly grateful , as voting citizens , for the work
of the Division of Parks and Recreation and ask for the
opportunity to address the Advisory Board during the April 1988
meeting .
Your attention and cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
♦400ri

RE: Additional Ball Parks
DATE: March 24 , 1988
I am sending you a copy of a letter and a program for the Babe Ruth
Baseball League of Naples , explaining why 2 additional baseball
fields just for this group are required.
I know, from talking to Larry Brennen of the Little League, that he
is also in need of ball fields for the large number of young people
that have registered in Little League.
I am pretty sure there is nothing that we can do about more fields
for this year, but I certainly think that we should try to set aside
money in the budget so that 2 more fields can be made available in
1989 . As I mentioned in an earlier memorandum, I suggest that the
additional balls fields be in the Golden Gate and North Naples
Community Parks .
