MINUTES OF
September 3 , 1976
The Collier County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
held its monthly meeting on September 3 , 1976 at 9 : 00 A.M. in
Building D at the Collier County Courthouse. The following
members were present :
Steve Smith - Chairman
Elton Townsend
Paul Bogatko
Bobby Fowler
Bud Coleman
Rollie R. Rice , Director of Parks and Recreation
Pat Cookson, Secretary
Steve Smith introduced the newest member, Bud Coleman to
the Board.
Chairman Smith gave a brief report on his speech to
the North Naples Rotary Club in reference to the referendum.
He reported that their response was not negative , they did have
a few questions on the maintenance and what kind of parks would
be built . He stated that they did seem in favor of the referendum.
Mr. Fowler stated that he has some tentative meetings set up with
some civic groups in Immokalee , but that he would like to have
some sort of fact sheet showing the facts and figures on the tax
millage. The fact sheet should show our present situation, why
we are doing what we are doing and what we can do if we get the
money. Mr. Rice stated that he will work this fact sheet up and
take it to the printers and hopes to have the sheet within the
next two or three weeks .

Mr. Elton Townsend stated that he has spoken to Judge
Stanley and he indicates that he would write a letter stating how
recreation relates to the bench in relation to juvenile delinquency
vs recreation. Mr. Townsend was instructed to obtain the letters
from Judge Stanley and possibly Judge Trettis .
The next item on the agenda is Golden Gate Golf Course
Purchase. Mr. Rice stated he and another County employee went
to the Golden Gate Golf Course and talked with the people concerning
the purchase of the course . The asking price of the golf course
is 2 . 6 million dollars and that is for the entire setup such as
the golf course, restaurant, motel, etc. Mr. Rice stated that
the County did not want to go into the motel and restaurant
business but that it could be leased out. The property is assessed
for 2. 2 million dollars . Mr. Rice stated that he has facts and
figures showing that a municipal golf course would be a money
making project and would be self sustaining. Mr. Rice explained
that even though the County now has quite a few courses most of
them are private or semi-private, that the average working man
can not afford to play golf. Mr. Rice explained that he is in
the process of trying to obtain some sort of grant to help
purchase this course.
Chairman Smith stated that re-election of officers is
necessary at this meeting as this is his last meeting. Paul
Bogatko made the motion to nominate Elton Twonsend as Chairman.
Motion seconded by Bob Fowler and approved unanimously.

Paul Bogatko made the motion to nominate Bob Fowler as
Vice Chairman. Motion Seconded by Steve Smith and approved
unanimously. Mr. Smith turned the gavel over to Elton Townsend
and wished him luck and success in his new capacity as Chairman.
Bobby Fowler made the motion to have a placque made for Steve
Smith for all his time , work & effort while serving on the Board.
Motion seconded by Elton Townsend and approved unanimously.
Bobby Fowler suggested in changing the meeting days from
the 2nd Friday of the month at 9 A.M. to the second Thursday
of the month at 1 P.M. . No definite action was taken on this
matter.
There being no further business , the meeting adjourned at
11 : 00 A.M.
