A healthy sidewalk is easier on the feet and knees than a sidewalk built of concrete. A healthy sidewalk might be built of a type of asphalt that softens the impact of walking, thus enabling many people with orthopedic problems to walk more easily. A healthy sidewalk is wide enough to accommodate, in each direction, the three wheels of a tricycle used by people of all ages to ride to shopping centers and to bring their purchases home in a wire basket conveniently attached in the rear. A healthy sidewalk is wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, baby carriages, strollers and marketing carts in each direction. A healthy sidewalk will show the distance walked in one-eighth mile increments painted on the sidewalk itself. To encourage developers to build healthy sidewalks, they could paint on the sidewalk or have a sign saying "This sidewalk constructed by company for your walking pleasure." The same could be done on existing sidewalks where friends and neighbors can join together for health-promoting walking and socializing. Developers of new developments might claim that there is no need for a sidewalk outside of the gates, because there is nothing and nobody outside of our gates. That might be true today, but with the population of Collier on a fast track to doubling by 2050, there probably is a new development or shopping plaza already planned for the area.
