PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on August 14, 1945, the people of the United States received word of the ending
of World War II; and,
WHEREAS, on that day, people in Collier County, Florida and around the world greeted the
news of the American Armed forces victory with celebration, humility, and
spiritual reflection; and,
WHEREAS, the Marine Corp League's tradition to promote the interest, and perpetuate the
history of the United States Marine Corps which fosters love for those American
principles and those Marines who have supported by blood and valor since the
founding of the Republic; and,
WHEREAS, the Naples Press Club encourages excellence in journalism and journalism
education, engagement with newsmakers, and community service; and,
WHEREAS, this unique collaboration of the Marine Corps League and the Naples Press Club
host the only event of its kind in the nation to honor journalists and the 1st
Amendment to emphasis the importance of the free press in a free society; and,
WHEREAS, Peter Thomas, International Television and Radio Association Lifetime Achievement
recipient and WWII veteran, becomes the 10th esteemed journalist to be honored
at the Annual "Honor the Free Press" event for his service to protect our 1St
Amendment rights.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that April 2-9, 2014 be designated as
HONOR THE FREE PRESS WEEK
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 25TH DAY OF MARCH, 2014.
