Threat Update:
Lt. Mike Jones reported there is no change in threat level from "Yellow." Numerous travel advisories are
in effect for various parts in the world, with concerns including Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
(MERS).
Officers and Membership:
At the last meeting,Chairman,Vice Chairman, and Secretary positions were elected with no change
from previous position holders. Citizen Corps has received a recommendation for a replacement for Lisa
Carr, who will no longer be serving as the RSVP representative. New member will be added once Board
of County Commissioners'approval is received.
Emergency Management Update:
Mike Shaw reported that the Human Services Manager position has been filled. The new hire is
expected to start in June, and an Emergency Management Coordinator vacancy is in the works of being
filled as well. Mike attended the Governor's Hurricane Conference on behalf of EM. The department is
facilitating a WebEOC/Hurricane Exercise July 9 and 10. Invitations will be forthcoming to various
partners.
Fire Season:
Rick Zyvoloski reported that the fire season continues due to a late start to our rainy season. Once the
rains begin, fire activity is expected to slow.
LMS:
Rick Zyvoloski reported that the next meeting of LMS will take place at 9:30am on July 18th at South
Regional Library. After the disaster issues from the flooding in North Florida, the LMS group may
consider increasing frequency of meetings due to a considerable amount of grant monies available.
Strategic Exercise Working Group:
Mike Shaw reported on recent exercise activities including the Collier Medical Countermeasure Full
Scale Exercise that EM partnered with Department of Health—Collier County in facilitating and
participating in the Naples Airport Exercise. The next meeting of the group will be on July 1 at 11:00am
at South Regional Library.
Individual Reports:
Dr. Neiweem reported that Dr.Colfer, Director of DOH-Collier,has retired. Her intended replacement is
also retiring, leaving a vacancy that they are looking to fill. Dr. Neiweem discussed MERS,sharing that it
is primarily confined to the Arabian Peninsula but two individual cases have been confirmed in Orlando
and Indianapolis. It can be transmitted human-to-human in close, prolonged contact with about a 30%
mortality rate. Primary concern is for infants, elderly, and medically compromised individuals. Dr.
Neiweem also discussed Chikungunya virus as a concern, though to a lesser extent than MERS. It can be
transmitted by mosquito. There is concern for misdiagnosis due to dengue fever's presence in many of
the same mosquitoes.
CERT:
Russ Rainey reported on"Make Mitigation Happen"workshops that CERT was asked to assist in hosting.
These workshops focused on structural considerations and how homes can be modified to better
protect against hazards. Older homes and communities with individual ownership may be best
candidates for these workshops.
Next Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,July 16,2014 at 3:00pm.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:45pm.
