GOLDEN GATE COMMUNITY PARK DOG RUN PROPOSAL
October 15, 2014

1. Purpose of Presentation: Advocating for the creation of a fenced off-leash dog run
space within the Golden Gate Community Park located on Santa Barbara Blvd in
East Naples.
2. WHY this space is needed:
a. Many residents in this East Naples area reside in gated and non-gated
communities that only permit leash walking for its four-legged companions due
to lack of space in the communities. In some cases, sidewalks are not available.
b. East Naples is continuing its growth as evidenced by the statistics secured from
Commissioner Fiala's office. David Weeks, Growth Management Plan Manager
for Collier County provided her office with approximate projected population
for 2014 compared to 2013 numbers. The following comparison shows
significant population increase for East Naples in just one year's time period:

c. There are no nearby off-leash dog run areas for residents in east Collier County.
The City of Naples Dog Park is the closest, but presents a hardship for many of
us residing in East Naples. There is a time and financial hardship for us to use
this park. The drive to the Naples Dog Park out-of-season depending upon one's
residence can take 30-40 minutes round-trip. In season, that number increases to
60-80 minutes. If someone needs to exercise their dog twice a day, the time and
fuel costs increase. Many who have responded interest and support in having a
nearby off-leash dog run space in the Golden Gate Community Park state the
ideal close location as very appealing. Most supporters reside within 5-7 minutes
or less from the Golden Gate Community Park.
d. An off-leash dog run area benefits the community in the following ways:
socialization with pets, sense of community, creating higher standards for pet
responsibility, decreasing loneliness and creating a space to make new friends,
sharing dog health information, people with dogs help create an "anti-crime"
environment, and creates an environment to communicate between people of
varying ages and ethnic backgrounds.
e. An off-leash dog run space in the Golden Gate Community Park partners with
the Collier County Parks & Recreation motto of"Play, Connect, Discover." In
addition to our four-legged companions getting the much needed space to run
and exercise, the owners have the opportunity to enjoy the facilities of the park.
3. WHO are the supporters???

4. WHAT is needed???
a. Space ... 3/4 acre to 1.35 acres with sturdy grass ground cover
b. 5-6 Ft Fencing with double entry gates with dividing fence between small and
large dog areas and double gate for mower entry
c. Picnic Table with metal roof cover in large and small dog areas
d. Dog Waste Disposal receptacles
e. Water fountain for dogs (if funding is available)
f. Stone, cement, or rock base around fountain and at entrances which receive
heavy foot and paw traffic
5. Rules for the off-leash dog run area
We have collected the posted rules from other dog parks and are happy to share and
collaborate with the Advisory Board and staff.
6. Finally, we would like to gain your approval and support to add an off-leash dog
run area within the Golden Gate Community Park. We would like the opportunity
to walk with you in the park and discuss possible locations.

Dear Mr. Williams,
I have been approached by Shirley Stewart and several other members of my community to lend
my support to the Dog Park Initiative for Golden Gate Community Park. After reviewing her
information I would support the effort to have these plans come to fruition.
As with most gated communities in our area the master plan for the community did not include
areas for off-leash dog exercise. At this time the industry is trending toward newer communities
including this amenity, but we do not have the space necessary for adding one into our
neighborhood.
Based on feedback from Mrs. Stewart, as well as other residents I feel that it would benefit our
community to include this area in the community p

Dog parks
segregate people's recreation & socialization with dogs from other forms of recreation & socialization
in public spaces.
Not that this applies to Naples but bigger cities feel a park filled with people and their pets cuts down
on drug deals, violence, vandalism and loitering.
"People who are out walking their dogs are going to meet everyone using the park. If you want to
know what's going in the neighborhood, it's the dog owners who know everything."
"Certainly one of the most appealing aspects of a dog park" is the anti-crime component. It's going
to help clean up the neighborhood, and you might not have a lot of people loitering or late night
cruising.
People with dogs who are out in the neighborhood - that's more eyes and ears.
It's a great thing for my family when they come down, gives another thing to do for them, plus lets
their dogs stretch their legs from living in an RV Park.
Plus, this would be a progressive move for Naples - I mean, what city doesn't have a dog park?
When I was living in Chicago, a very good move was dog parks. Though the reasons may not apply to
Naples, yet....dogs need to have activity, utilize some of that energy. There is nothing bad about
laving a dog park.

A Dog Park in the Golden Gate Community will effect hundreds of families in a positive way. The percentage of
Collier County families who are adopting a pet is growing. What better way to bring neighbors together than through
socializing with their pets.
A recent study has shown that Counties that have dog parks are experiencing less abandon animals.
Another study of one hundred dog parks across America have reported a sharp rise in neutered and spayed dogs.
The social interactions of people with their dogs in dog parks has been reflected in the increase of pet related family
responsibilities.
At our most recent Angel Legacy For Animal Welfare board meeting we discussed the advantages of having a Dog
Park in the Golden Gate Community. Here are some of our reasons for enthusiastically supporting the creation of a
Dog Park in the Golden Gate Community:
1. A cross section of people from various communities will be socializing with their pets.
2. The exchange of information concerning pet behavior and pet health.
3. Making friends with people from different ethnic backgrounds, thereby enriching the community.
4. Creating higher standards for pet responsibilities through role models.
5. Decreasing loneliness and depression by interacting with other families with pets.
6. Sharing past and currant events that engender social interaction and neighborliness.

I am definitely interested in having an off leash dog park in the Golden Gate Community Park. The one in
Veterans Park is too far to visit on a frequent basis. I registered my dog for the Park off Central Ave but it too is
not as convenient as one would be off Santa Barbara. I am in Naples Heritage and about to move to a location
off Radio Rd.

Hello Just heard of your efforts concerning possibly setting up a dog park in the Collier/Golden Gate area. Great
idea!!!! When we are in Naples for the winter we frequent the dog park just off of Goodlette-Frank.

I would love to see the Golden Gate Park Dog Park come to fruition. Area residents would love to
have a nearby park to take their dogs off leash. I live in Glen Eagles, and I know many of my
neighbors would also agree that it is a great idea, and would use it all the time. The location is

I heard through my club's newsletter about your proposal for a dog park in Collier
County. We have used the park on Goodlette Frank and were very pleased. Although
we were there off-season, it was clean and well constructed, separating the big dogs
from the smaller dogs.
It would be great to have a dog park closer to our area. Please include me as a

We would be very much interested in a nearby dog park. Very few of the apartment complexes
have any such amenities. You should get them to pitch in so the they could list the amenity as
"Nearby". We live in Sabal Key Apts. and have nothing, no benches and bad grass.
We are a transplant from Cincinnati and were a member of Wags Dog Park. It was a pay per park

Haven't seen anything in NDN recently about Shirley Stewart's efforts to obtain a Dog Park in Golden Gate
area. Really hoping this could be located at the park on Santa Barbara. We live in "Sherwood" (Radio Road),
and have no fenced areas for neighborhood dogs to run free. We have a 7 year-old wheaton-colored Cairn
Terrier, "Champion Lorna Doone". She loves every dog she meets when we are out walking (big or small),
and she loves to run. For sure she doesn't get as much exercise as she needs and would like because we can't
run with her. We have friends in Bucks Co, PA who regularly use a dog park and love it. We'd appreciate
knowing if there has been any further movement toward establishing a park in our area. Dog-walkers here
all wish we had a fenced play-area, but that isn't doable for just our little community, so our best hope is for

Gate Community Park on Santa Barbara -- much closer for us. There are a lot of small
communities with loads of dogs along Radio Road toward Davis Blvd and Collier Blvd. that would
use a park there, I'm sure. We are full time in Florida (from Phila area of PA) and our address here

Within our community there isn't a space available for pet owners to allow their dogs to run around without being
on a leash.
Our declaration also prohibit dogs from not being on a leash.
