Meeting Minutes for 3-12-07 Special Information Gathering Meeting

NEW BUSINESS: The meeting was attended by eight (8) local residents from Immokalee.
Name and address information was collected on a "sign-in" sheet.
Mike DeRuntz opened the meeting with a brief welcoming statement, went through the
introductions, and stated the purpose for the meeting. Robert Wiley followed with a brief
overview of the Floodplain Management Plan and the Community Rating System. Mike
DeRuntz explained the process of gathering public input and how the meeting would be
conducted.
A map and questionnaire forms were available at each table, and for the next thirty (30) minutes
the residents began noting areas of flooding they had personally observed. COMMITTEE
members were available in the room to answer questions of the residents while they were
marking the map and filling in the questionnaires. When it appeared that everyone was done,
each person was asked to call out the types of flooding observed with the following results:
Table A
o Scattered flooding observed, in particular along New Market Road and Lake Trafford
Road due to poor maintenance of drainage facilities
o Recommendation made to improve maintenance, clean out the canals and inventory
all the culverts to make sure they are clean and functioning

o Road flooding on New Market Road, especially near the Eagles Club where 12" to
14" of water has covered the road at times
o Recommendation made to install better drainage facilities and inventory existing ones

o flooding at the intersection of Lake Traffort Road and Jefferson Street where water
was high enough to flood the church building
o House flooding was observed at the Madison Ave./Dixie Ave. area
o The canal around the airport has had problems in the past/maintenance issue
o Need to make improvements to the existing ditch and culverts to get drainage to go
northeast from the Jefferson Street/Indian River Street area

. Twin 48" culverts under the bike path restricting flow
. Gene Calvert committed County to have the existing pipes out by June 2007 and
new box culverts installed in November 2007.
. Drainage restriction from construction of the first "Habitat for Humanity"
development has not been removed. Why not?
o Long history of road flooding in the 1st StreetlNew Market Road area
o friendship Lane/CR-846 area has seen flow restrictions and deeper standing water in
the last 5 years. Why0
